San Diego Democratic Women’s Club SAN DIEGO DEMOCRATIC WOMEN’S CLUB JOINS SD BRANCH NAACP TO SPONSOR VOTING RIGHTS ACT REAUTHORIZATION FORUMSan Diego, CA. - The San Diego Democratic Women’s Club is proud to join the San Diego Branch NAACP and other local groups in co-sponsoring a community forum on reauthorization of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The Forum will begin at 6:30 p.m. on March 31, 2006 at the Malcolm X Library, located at 5148 Market Street, San Diego, CA. Civil Rights Leader and Congressional District 51 Representative Congressman Bob Filner will provide the keynote address, followed by a panel discussion. Club President Pat Washington noted that while a great deal of attention has rightfully been focused on protecting racial-ethnic communities from discrimination in the voting process, it is also important to showcase the important role women play in protecting voting rights. Washington goes on to say, “It is no accident that this particular version of the bipartisan Voting Rights Act that is presently up for renewal is named “The Fannie Lou Hamer, Rosa Parks, and Coretta Scott King Voting Rights Act Reauthorization and Amendments Act of 2006. Naming the Reauthorization Act after these key female civil rights champions is both a testament to their unique contributions to civil rights and a beautiful reminder that women have been at the forefront of community efforts to protect and advance voting protections for all citizens.” The San Diego Democratic Women’s Club strives to increase women’s political participation at all levels of government. The Club meets the fourth Saturday of each month at the Weingart City Heights Library from 10a.m. til Noon. The Weingart City Heights located at 3795 Fairmount Avenue, San Diego, CA. Meetings are free and open to the public. In addition to the San Diego NAACP and the San Diego Democratic Women’s Club, the forum is co-sponsored by the Filipino American Community Empowerment, (FACE); the Earl B. Gilliam Bar Association; National Council of Negro Women; CA Common Cause; Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; the Martin Luther King, Jr. Democratic Club, and others. # # # |
