Lessons learned from “Washington v CSU Board of Trustees”

Despite the good work that AAUW’s Legal Advocacy Fund has been doing for the past 25 years to support sex discrimination litigation in higher education, Dr. Pat Washington’s story will convince us that our work is not over. She was the only Black full-time Women’s studies faculty member hired in the history of San Diego State University. She more than satisfied the requirements for tenure which she was denied. When she brought suit, San Diego County Superior Court Judge, Jay Bloom, stated that evidence showed that Washington’s colleagues “did not like her,” and this was sufficient justification for firing her, since “a personal grudge or resentment can constitute a legitimate, non-discriminatory reason for an adverse employment decision.” AAUW expressed outrage at the judge’s decision and supported her cause with at least $20,000 in assistance for legal fees incurred in her case. She continued to encounter other biased legal decisions as her case progressed. Come and hear her story.
